Jubilee Library, Brighton

Ensuring Confidentiality with Sound Masking Technology.

Jubilee Library, the main public library in Brighton, is a centerpiece of the Jubilee Square development. Opened in 2005 by the Princess Royal, it is one of the most energy-efficient buildings in England, with a carbon footprint half that of a traditional public building of comparable size. Beyond its extensive literature collection, Jubilee Library serves as a vibrant community hub, offering IT facilities, a business suite with conference rooms, and additional spaces for exhibitions and events.

As part of their commitment to privacy and confidentiality, Kier Group Facilities Management, managing the library for Brighton & Hove City Council, sought a sound masking solution for the conference and meeting rooms. These spaces are frequently used by local businesses, universities, council departments, and charities, all of whom require an environment where confidential discussions can be held without concern for being overheard.

Louise Millard, Commercial and Conference Coordinator for Jubilee Library, explained, “Users of our spaces might be discussing sensitive matters, and we do not want this information overheard in public areas or corridors.”

To meet this need, TwistedPair, a unified business solutions provider, was tasked with designing and installing the sound masking system. The solution introduced additional layers of sound that mask excessive speech noise, making the environment more private, comfortable, and free from distractions.

The system, installed over eight days, involved placing 57 sound masking emitters across the meeting rooms adjacent to public areas. By disrupting sound waves, the system helps to prevent conversations from spilling out into public areas and between adjacent meeting rooms, ensuring greater confidentiality.

“The sound masking solution is very easy to operate, and speech intelligibility outside of the rooms is markedly reduced once the system is in operation,” said Louise Millard.

Adam Glyde, Managing Director for TwistedPair, added, “You can absorb, you can block, but the only way you can truly manage the risk is by covering with Sound Masking. It is the only controllable method.”
